Meet Kay

Meet Kay Power

Kay spent a decade working towards a home of her own. The granny flat was meant to protect that independence and bring her closer to family.

At home

Home is something she makes

Kay is a mother of three and Granny to three. She is practical, generous and always working on something. At her last home, the garage held a full wall of tools. She painted, repaired, maintained and transformed the garden herself.

“I love doing things to my home: painting it, getting the garden looking nice and maintaining it. And mostly my spa.”

The work

She worked for her independence

After her divorce, Kay spent a decade saving to buy a house in her own name. She worked long days as a cleaner to keep the mortgage paid and put money aside for surgery and recovery.

After tearing her Achilles in January 2023, she waited two and a half years for surgery. It did not succeed. She now works as an Amazon driver while living with ongoing pain.

“Kay was so proud to become a homeowner on her own, and she worked extremely hard to achieve it.”

The plan

Mortgage free, semi-retired, next door to the grandchildren

The house came with a mortgage that her health would no longer let her keep working to cover. Selling it and buying the granny flat was the way out: no mortgage, semi-retirement, and the grandchildren next door.

“I had a mortgage I could not keep working to cover. My health would not let me. Selling the house and buying the granny flat was how I would be mortgage free, semi-retire and enjoy my life near the grandchildren.”

Granny land

The block was already Granny Land

Her three children encouraged her to sell. The empty block at her daughter Dana's property was already called Granny Land. Kay pictured living independently, stepping back from physical work, having the grandchildren sleep over and keeping her sewing set up for the next baby.

“I was looking forward to living on my own and having my grandkids sleep over.”

Asgard

A 25kg lap dog

Named after Thor, Kay's favourite Marvel character, Asgard is completely convinced he is a lap dog.

He has an extraordinary tongue. If you think you're standing safely out of reach, you're not.

He is part of what home means to Kay, although after the recent moves, even he seems to have lost track of where that is.

“Even my dog is confused about where he lives.”

What she wants

The home she bought, completed

Kay is not asking for a different house or a different plan. She wants the home she bought completed. She also wants the legal costs she incurred trying to protect it reimbursed.

13 October 2026: Expandify terminated the agreement and says it will not deliver the home. Kay’s solicitor disputes its right to terminate. There is still no home on her site.

“I just want my home built and to be reimbursed for my lawyer.”
